Record floods hit parts of Europe

Onlookers gather at a vista point overlooking the record flooding in the German city of Passau.

The Danube's water level reached a record high of 12.2 metres there on Monday, last seen in the 16th century.

Most if not all of the city's streets are underwater, with rescue workers making their way through town by motorboat.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency for the region.

Meanwhile, the worst floods to hit the Czech Republic in a decade have disrupted public transport and forced school closures.

And there is no end in sight to the rising water levels on the Vltava River that cuts through Prague's historic centre.

The subway network was also halted for the first time since massive floods submerged the city in 2002 and caused billions of dollars of damage.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas declared a state of emergency for most of the nation on Sunday and pledged over $15 million dollars in relief efforts.
