Peru's heaviest snowfall in ten years brought disaster for livestock owners.
A quarter of a million alpacas have died from starvation, unable to get to the grass beneath the thick icy cold blanket.
(SOUNDBITE)(Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN SAYING:
"Yes, a lot of livestock has died and there is no help. We couldn't get to them. We've been trying to get there for three days and haven't been able to."
Peru's president has declared an emergency in nine provinces in the Puno region.
On Tuesday he delivered aid personally to residents and promised more was on the way.
Bolivia's also suffering.
Heavy snows have blocked roads, stranded vehicles and brought down power lines in some areas.
There too authorities say thousands of farm animals are cut off without fodder and many have died.
In Brazil the unexpected arrival of snow told a very different story.
