The citizens of Switzerland will vote on an initiative to set a basic unconditional income of about 28 hundred dollars a month that would be paid to every adult by the state.

Because of growing inequality in pay, a political committee gathered over 100 thousand signatures in support of the new initiative.

As a way to bring attention to their cause, activists dumped 8 million 5 cent Swiss coins from a truck onto the Federal Square outside of the parliament building in Bern.

The organizing committee in support of the initiative says that social insurance systems will partially fund the basic income plan.

As part of the law in Switzerland, political initiatives supported by citizens are considered by the government in referenda meetings, which are usually held a few times every year regarding different topics.

Additionally, there are several legal initiatives aimed at controlling compensation to company executives in Switzerland.

Recently, a law passed giving publicly owned company shareholders power over how much executives are paid.

Another initiative that has yet to be voted on will make it so that the monthly pay of a company executive can’t be any higher than the annual salary of the lowest paid employee.
