State of emergency in Sardinia after strike by Cyclone Cleopatra

Cyclone Cleopatra leaves its deadly mark on Sardinia, flooding the island; ripping a part bridges and killing more than a dozen people.

Some homes have been left with litte more than memories.

"I was here with a relative and we managed to open the door with all this water inside. It was just devastating. The kids didn't have anything, they were naked, they managed to get out by the back stairs. I came in virtually swimming, the water came up to my chest. It was just devastating."

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) CYCLONE VICTIM, FRANCESCO BRANDANO, SAYING:

"Look at how everything is, everything is wet, everything needs to be thrown away. Everything is gone, our documents, everything. We haven't got anything left."

Residents try to salvage what they can from waterlogged cars, hoping to hang on to what they can after many lost so much.
