A father in Florida is claiming that his 7-year-old son was hit by pieces of a meteorite while playing outside.

The chances of getting struck by meteorite fragments are exceptionally low. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

A father in Florida is claiming that his 7-year-old son was hit by pieces of a meteorite while innocently playing outside. The little boy, Steven Lippard had a large laceration on his head which required stitches.

The baffling incident occurred on a recent Saturday. When playing in the yard, Steven began bleeding from a gash on his head, the cause of which was a complete mystery.

The child’s father, Wayne initially thought the cut resulted from a golf ball or even a bird that had swooped down too low. However the father and son searched the ground and quickly found the tiny pebbles.

After Steven received medical attention, the rocks were sent for testing. Researchers at Florida Atlantic University found that the fragments were in fact metallic, meaning it’s a definite possibility they could have originated in space.

Additional testing needs to be conducted to positively confirm the pebbles are from a meteorite. Only two cases in recent history have been reported regarding meteorite encounters.
