The anti-apartheid icon is highly revered in India as a symbol of courage and tolerance and for adopting methods of non-violence and peace similar to that espoused by Mahatma Gandhi.
The former South African President was one of the three people of non-Indian origin and the second non-citizen to be awarded the country's highest civilian honor in 1990.
