Tens of thousands of bats have infested the city of Charter Towers in Queensland, Australia.
The city council is trying to drive them away using horns, helicopters and gun blasts.
Residents say they have had enough -- of the noise, and of bat droppings that have covered their yards.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHARTERS TOWERS RESIDENT, AYLA POTT SAYING:
"It stinks, it smells, some days it's that unbearable you can't open your doors."
Animal welfare advocates say the removal is inhumane.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED CONSERVATIONIST SAYING:
"They have no chance to fly off, they have no chance to save their babies. They're just on the ground and they are probably injured and they could die."
The council said they will continue with drastic measures for the next 10 days to see if they can rid the city of the bats.
