STORY: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for improved relations with South Korean in a New Year speech on Wednesday (January 1).
The rare address was carried by the North's state television that largely mirrored an address a year ago but made no indications that he was ready to initiate concrete steps to end acrimony.
North and South Korea remain technically at war under a truce that ended the 1950-53 Korean War signed by the United States, China and the North. The United States maintains 28,500 troops in the South in joint defence against the North.
He invoked the destiny of the Korean nation to be reunited but warned of disaster if the South and its ally the United States committed acts of aggression.
"Dangerous circumstances are being established, which could make a mino
