When you have an old device like a scanner that works but does not have drivers for Windows 7 then making a virtualbox and connecting your device to it might let you use your device instead of throwing it away.
For this tutorial you need Oracle virtualbox https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
and ubuntu desktop installation iso http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
