A Day In History: The Life of Nelson Mandela

2014-01-24 2 Dailymotion

On July 18th, 1918 Nelson Mandela was born. He is one of the most influential characters in stopping apartheid in South Africa. In his struggle to end apartheid, he would be put in jail and serve twenty seven (27) years in prison. After he was finally released, Nelson Mandela would go on to become President of South Africa after winning the first multiracial elections held in the country. His political status ultimately helped him overcome the issues of racism and apartheid that had tainted South Africa since the Nationalist Party took over in 1948. Since his Presidency, Nelson Mandela has remained a prominent figure in cultural and political affairs throughout the world. Unfortunately, recent health issues have placed Mandela in critical condition and there is no sure answer as to how much longer this great leader will be around for. Join Cliff of That Was History and celebrate the birth and legacy of such an influential character of our time.
