Shuttle Challenger was scheduled to launch on STS-51-L and lifted off at January 28th 1986, 16:38 UTC, Onboard NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite B. 72 seconds into flight an O-ring on her right Solid Rocket Booster had failed, allowing super hot gasses to melt away at the support strut. The Solid Rocket Booster than rotated into the External Tank causing a structural failure and explosion of the tank. The orbiter and crew were lost in the disaster.
