It began as an uprising by a group of farmers in central Colombia that transformed into one of the world's deadliest - and richest - guerilla armies. Fifty years on, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as FARC, remains a powerful force. Its anniversary comes at a key stage in peace talks with the government. The talks to end a conflict that has cost more than 200,000 lives and internally displaced at least six million Colombians, are making progress in Havana, Cuba.
