Before my time of prayer
you were there
when I practiced
I saw you then too
people leave impressions
some of little effect
and some have been damaging
creating only regret
but not you
I wish you could have been my husband
I wish you could have been my brother
or my father or mother or best friend or lover
I wish you could have been a part of my life
from the time I was born
yes that far back
because what you motivate in me
how you change
the directions I look and see
scold and teach
but never push me out of your reach
or throw me away
I've needed someone like you all along
and I just needed to say
although it was a 44 year journey until we met
you were worth the wait
