Where I am from.
A thousand miles from here:
Gold-tinted corn stalks
Baby green soybeans
Prairie grass
Sway like the waves of the ocean
In the afternoon twilight
“Big sky country”
Sky ‘till the end of the world’s edge
A smudged corn-silk colored mark
So far away
I was born there
Nearly sixteen years ago, in this small
Midwestern campus town
Farmer’s Market outside
Kettle corn, homemade strawberry soap, and fresh peaches
Cul-de-sacs, tightly-knit communities
Where everyone knows you
Where you feel safe walking home at night
St. Patrick’s 10: 30 AM Church Choir
A family of grandfathers, mothers, dads,
Friends.
The music, the passion, the love
The civil rights movement is very present there
An influential Gay Straight Alliance
Shortage of racial slurs and jokes
Abundance of diversity
Where I am from.
My home.
They say home is where the heart is
At first, home was the comforting hills of Pennsylvania
Then it was the sweet rolling plains of Illinois
It is still Illinois
“Home is where the heart is”
And my heart has not left it, though I have
It waits for me to return
A thousand miles away
My heart resides
