For ignoring you
For being selfish
For thinking
That you wouldn't send one
That you didn't care
That I cared more
That I expected an invitation
In the beginning
But got a thank-you card
In the end
But...your thank-you card...
Is just as generous as any card
Whether it comes in the beginning
Or in the end
It's funny how these 'proper' rules
Can turn our hearts into stones
Your thank-you card
Softened my heart of stone
Into cotton
Allowing more love
More goodness to be absorbed
My eyes have become stones
For next time
Proper rules won't affect my heart
But...my eyes will stay fixed and stiff
And my mind will remember
That what is 'proper'
That what is a 'rule'
Cannot be applied
And will not exist
Between flesh and blood
Between our history
Between our friendship
Between me and you
