Well, I met this man
at a party last night
and he had an interesting kind of face,
craggy and weatherbeaten
and intriguingly lupine,
and an intelligent manner of expression
which I deemed worthy of exploration.
So I seated myself opposite him
on the porch rail and,
sipping the obligatory glass of white wine,
insinuated myself into the conversation.
We spoke of male/female matters
and I was at my scintillating best
in the thrust and parry of adversarial pretence,
with clever puns,
witty ripostes
and sparkling repartee
until, suddenly, he rose and stomped off,
muttering something about
aggressive bitch
and
feminist rhetoric.
I was taken aback,
amazed,
flabbergasted.
I had considered it foreplay.
