Rereading Shelley's 'Ozymandias' recently
gave me time to reconsider
the glory days of Germany
I recalled the blurry black and white
newsreels of the time
my mates and I viewed
in the local movie palace
The rows of steel helmets
and glossy jackboots
in precise ranks
as battalions
raised arms
'Heil Hitler! '
Be grateful that we who served
and survived can view scenes
that linger in memories
and in the printed word!
