Four years of telling her
how very much he loved her,
he never asked to marry her.
When asked why, he said
our liabilities exceed our assets.
'And there is the door, ' she
answered as if commenting on the
weather.
A day later he presented her
with his deceased mother's
engagement ring,
a thin band with a lusterless,
sad-looking stone,
She asked him to leave,
and later discovered,
he had left the ring behind.
She tried it on. It fit perfectly.
Then she took it to a jeweler to have
it cleaned and polished until it sparkled.
An entire week, she thought very hard
and decided to return it.
He smiled and presented her
with a ring that took her breath away!

and the spectacular,

and finally asked him,
'Which one is counterfeit? '
'The last two', he said,
but my heart is made of gold.
