The clouds parted and the terrain that the competitors needed to conquer came in to view.
The Red Bull X-Alps is not supposed to be easy.
And when darkness falls, the race gets even harder.
The race remains open with teams spread out across the 200km of the German and Austrian Alps.
Race leaders Christian Maurer of Switzerland and Antoine Girard of France managed to escape frequent storms to scale Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze.
Maurer was rewarded with excellent conditions as he flew 25kilometres in two hours on his paraglider.
Other teams who arrived later at Zugspitze discovered that the weather had already closed in - and it was difficult to launch.
The team in last place at 0600 local time on Wednesday (10th July) will be eliminated from the competition.
