There is something in the heart abiding:
it longs to go back to the past
to put right the wrong deed,
to retract the hurtful word,
to relive the sweet moment.
There is something in the heart abiding:
it longs to be near loved ones when far,
wishes for the happy moment to last forever,
clings desperately to those who must depart
as Death snatches them from our midst.
Time, alas, denies us our longings,
it marches on heedless of our wishes,
acts as though it is master of our destiny,
keeps us tethered to the present
free only to roam within a boundary.
In fact, that something in the heart abiding
is unbounded, free from Time’s constraints:
it regrets and repents,
forgives and forgets,
reaches out to the tree of the past
and plucks the fruit of that sweet moment
to re-live it in the present.
That something in the heart abiding is love.
