Ils étaient en jaune ce dimanche à Sarajevo, couleur symbole du Tour de France, pour rappeler un centième anniversaire un peu particulier. Le 28 juin 1914, jour où était donné le départ de la centième Grande boucle, l’archiduc François-Ferdinand était assassiné, événement considéré comme le déclencheur de la Première guerre mondiale. Outre les milliers d’amateurs de vélo présents ce dimanche, on comptait aussi 140 professionnels.
Bakir Izetbegovic, Bosnian President:
“ Si on doit trouver quelque chose de positif à la guerre, ce sont les leçons que l’on en tire, a déclaré Bakir Izetbegovic. Nous sommes en train de construire un siècle de paix. C’est ainsi que je veux voir ce jour : l’invitation à inaugurer un siècle de paix dans les Balkans et en Europe.”
L’assassinat de l’héritier de la couronne d’Autriche-Hongrie est survenu lors d’une visite à Sarajevo que lui avaient pourtant déconseillé plusieurs de ses proches, la trouvant trop périlleuse.
Le meurtrier s’appelle Gavrilo Princip, membre de “Jeune Bosnie”, un groupe de jeunes anarchistes musulmans de nationalité serbe et croate. Aujourd’hui encore, sa mémoire est célébrée en Serbie comme celle d’un héros nationaliste.
La Première guerre mondiale a fait 9 millions de morts et a laissé 8 millions de personnes invalides.
