Russia has banned Polish fruit and vegetable imports into the country as of August 1.
The move came following the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions on Russia’s banking, oil and defence sectors because of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.
But in Poland, a campaign has been launched to promote the country’s fruit and vegetables.
“We decided to go out onto the streets with these apples to show Vladimir Putin what we think of his politics and to support our farmers. The whole country should be eating apples today,” said Radomir Szumelda, a member of the Civic Platform Party.
Poland’s agriculture minister says the country’s farmers affected by the ban should receive aid.
“I want our producers to receive the best compensation possible from the European Union, at least the production costs. It’s not their fault and it’s not Poland’s fault either,” said Marek Sawicki, Polish Minister of Agriculture.
Warsaw hopes an increase in domestic consumption will cushion a fall in sales.
