Various kinds of wild animals and birds were seen at the Imphal zoo.
The genus and species names of the emu are Dromaius novaehollandiae.
Emu-birds are members of the ratite family along with ostrich, rhea, cassowary and kiwi.
Emu are prehistoric birds that originated about 80 million years ago in Australia.
Flightless, but they have strong legs and run very fast and can run up to speeds of 30 miles per hour (50 kilometers per hour).
Manipur Zoological Garden or simply Imphal Zoo is situated around 6km from the main city. It is at Iroishemba, along the Imphal-Kangchup Road. The zoo is between a small hillock covered with pine trees and a vast open paddy field. The Imphal Zoo is best known for showcasing animals endemic to the state; some of which are considered rare and endangered. It is also known as the 'Jewel Box' of Manipur.
