The deadly shooting took place around 5 p.m. yesterday at Peregrine Park in Sacramento. The park is described as having a bike trail, a softball diamond, and volleyball and basketball courts as well as picnic tables and a play area for children. According to police, violence in the park is a rare occurrence.
Witnesses say a gold Buick pulled up and a group of men got out of the car, walked up to the crowd and began shooting. While none of the victims have been identified, the deceased is described as a man in his 20s. The injured, many of whom drove themselves or were driven by friends and family to hospital, are described as having non-life-threatening injuries.
Most of those shot were shot were shot in the back or the leg. The seven-year-old child sustained a leg injury.
One person who was at the party and did not want to be identified said, "I just dove to the ground. There was about 25-30 shots that rang out, everyone was screaming and yelling and just running all hysterical."
The park is surrounded by homes. Another witness said, "Some lady over there pulled a bunch of kids, she grabbed them and pulled them into her house."
The deceased man's uncle said, "A coward walked up to this party. There were no guns here. He came with a gun — whoever shot my nephew."
Police are also not saying how many suspects they are looking for. They believe the shooting was gang-related but do not understand why the shooting took place at a party with a lot of children around.
