A 9-year-old boy is said to be in grave condition after he got shot in the head by a stray bullet outside the Mayfair Mansions apartment complex in Northeast D.C.
The boy was an unintended victim during the exchange of gunfire around 9 p.m. in the 3700 block of Hayes Street NE. He was shot in the parking lot of Mayfair Mansions apartments, right next to a neighborhood playground.
Responding officers cradled the boy and transported him to a hospital in a police cruiser.
"[The neighborhood] is a ghost town. I'm scared to come outside," one neighbor said.
"I would just like the community to keep praying for my little brother... at some point it all needs to end before everybody is doing what we're doing as a family," the victim's sister said.
Two men were also injured in the shooting, having suffered non-life threatening injuries. Police haven't said whether those men are victims or suspects as they piece together what happened that rainy Friday night.
Some weapons have been recovered from near the scene.
