Surprise Me!

Trevor Toews - What He Wrote In The Dust

I'll never forget how they picked up those rocks
Trembling with anger, self-justified
How they pointed at me with those long bony fingers
And told Him, almost excitedly, according to law,
I must die.

I'll never forget the remorse and the guilt,
The stark realization of what I had done.
Nor the way that He listened with hardly an interest,
As if to ignore them, He stooped and He wrote
On the ground.

Then He rose with a purpose,
Demanding respect, but with love in His tone,
"Whoever among you, is sinless,
Cast the first stone."

And I'll never forget the startled expressions,
The grim, rapid flashbacks of things they had done,
The stones being dropped, by the tears at my feet
The guilt, the deflation as they filed away,
One by one.

No I'll never forget how He didn't condemn me,
How the terror and anguish was instantly hushed,
Nor the love in His eyes, nor the promise I made Him,
And I'll never forget…
What He wrote
In the dust.
