Surprise Me!

Hannah Bryson Price - Myself

After a long day of education,
I walk past my reflection.
There I stare, just for a moment,
Faced with my greatest opponent.
Quickly I take my leave,
Mind racing, too much on my sleeve.

Going back to the reflection,
Staring long, I see deeper into my complexion.
Many parts to me,
This is easy to see.
However, not easily defined
I see all that is confined.
My desire to fly,
Grounded by my own cry.
My fear to stand out with my voice,
Enclosed, to hold back is my choice.
I don't feel too smart,
Not always confident to start.
I have been told that I am too defensive,
That I over react to things offensive.
It seems I am too dark.

About to turn away,
I see the light that will even the weigh.
Though I am grounded,
My perseverance stands, myself astounded.
Though I fear to sing out,
I still do when no one else is about.
Don't see myself as smart, yet others do.
I might think another way, after all intelligence has got me through.
I defend to give others a voice,
Those who may not have a choice.

I am not dark.
Nor am I light.
I am gray.
I am a balance of all that is, and all that isn't.
I am human.
I am me.
