American Empire
Debbie Kean
1st February 2005.
Four score and seven years…
Two hundred twenty nine,
The sum of all our fears
Theirs, and yours and mine
An Empire only lasts so long
As those supporting it desire
For centuries now, they've sung their song
'Let freedom ring' (or reign)
No matter what we have to do
If it be born in fire.
If freedom must be birthed in blood,
With lies, and guns and bombs
The history that is understood
No matter that the truth be hid
(Though not hid well, it must be said)
It must end in the tombs.
