Over the coffee cup my eyes seek yours
Busy with English marmalade and toast,
Wondering peering through their opaque doors
Which just ajar suggest the whiff of roast
Stronger and stranger than my breakfast blend,
And then you pour from yours into my cup
So that we silently drink friend to friend,
Lover to lover, partners who will wake up
Thoughts that lie dormant sparking eye to eye,
Lighting the images like beacon fires
Behind your retina where there in richness lie
Granules of sparkling coffee grounds, desires
Distant and ever present, crumbs of clues,
Tomorrow’s promises of fresher brews.
