Bill Smith - Angel's Fingers Danced

Angels Fingers Danced
Sat in alcohol's warm embrace
Eyes fixed into the red
Not one thought of where or why
We'd supped and been well fed
Many a face appeared there
Midst' petrol blue and grey
Come morning's dust to dust
The ash would drift away

High above shone the moon
Hung in a black night sky
As Angel's fingers danced to freedom
To fade and slowly die

So we sat and mused awhile
In alcohol's fuddled head
Reminiscing long and hard
Of those we knew now dead
As Angel's fingers danced the night
Reaching for the moon
To fade and die on a breath
On leaving flames full bloom

There we sat and laughed a smile
As rings were pulled to hiss
Empty tubes of memory
Thrown to the red abyss
Sharing a silence minutes long
No need for deed nor' name
As Angel's fingers dared to dream
A life beyond the flame

As we sat round the bonfire at 4 in the morning, three friends shooting the breeze one of our number, a former Fireman imparted the fact that the little flames that you sometimes see breaking off the end of larger flames are known if some Fire Stations by firemen as Angel's Fingers,
