Surprise Me!

Tailor Bell - From Tethys Late Groom

Beyond my upper deck
Before the open bay
Large houses line wide canals
Persistent molars of a near edentulous jaw
And there in swallowing darkness a glowing
Fishlight underwater
Lies left off the dock
Of the distant enamelled dwelling, circling
About in silence in my eyes
Fixed upon a pale green pelican
Searching for his dinner, a late arriver
In this Iapetus Ocean remnant
Enveloped in black sky warmly broken
Rounding pensively staring into
Soupy light where fat mullet stray
To the right glowing ember coals I see
Churning engine cones ignited
Throttles boosting white hot
Jet tangos and call sign egos
Slipping forth in silent air
On the horizon ahead well spaced pews
Tall energy lamps turn darkness
Faint ugly blue, just the horizon, though
Despite my gifts, they would not forgive
My betrayal at this strange juncture
He veers slowly about as I search
Dilated pupils and wide open eyes
A hiding mate, screeches aloud
Cenozoic cry for food fragments
The night and catches me
Were any man or woman to survive
Such an oblique arrival into antiquity
To face such creatures
Unarmed, with bare hands, I raise up
Keeping away from the light
Turbines subduct below ground
Thumping mullet nudge my neck
In this Area, the wind dies down with evolution
Son of Archaeopteryx scans the chop
Visibility poor, he paddles in slow
Clearances pulse to steeple top, cracking out
Pelican green, Pelican go
