My friend, I saw the autumn in your eyes.
November was awaiting your reply.
Like a gray leaf long fated for the air,
You left for want of flight to keep you there.
I had to stand and watch your landscape close.
Nothing was left but woodsmoke on old clothes,
Which had no power to color my space blue,
For you had taken dusk away with you.
