Edge of Ely
Crisp echoed night -
Fen by the Freeway
Flooded with light.
Cries spike out
Like distant chicks
Starved in a wilderness of sticks.
French drains chuckle,
Drink the showers -
Eerily in the early hours.
Collared like priests
The council trees
Pray for growth
In the Fenland breeze.
