My mother is real...
she is not the person described in
many odes and poems
she is not all perfume and
cinnamon and soft sheets and
beach holidays
she is not bed-time stories and
ballet recitals
My mother is real...
she wears over-alls when she
works in the garden
she cries loudly and even whails
when she is hurt
she cannot bake to save her life
and drives her car as fast as
possible
My mother is real...
I've seen her naked many times -
she has dark red birth marks
running down her one leg.... as if she is
carrying the stains of life,
marked for all the wrong things to
happen to her... and she shows
those scars for all to see
My mother is real...
She is not the Proverbs 31 woman
yet she is a child of God
and the Queen of my universe
