Girl enters the world full of promise. Girl simultaneously inspires pride and guilt in her mother. Girl doesn’t see mother again for a week. When mother returns, girl and mother are inseparable.

Until…

Mother announces that there will be another girl. In late July. Girl helps mother get the bedroom ready. Girl dreads the days as mother’s stomach swells knowing it will too soon burst, bringing forth the new girl. Finally, the day arrives along with Baby Girl.

Now, Big Girl and Baby Girl are inseparable. It’s a chilly spring morning as they walk to the bus stop hand in hand. Matching parkas let people know that these girls are together. Big Girl stops half way up the steps on the bus and lowers her hand to help Baby Girl up the first steep stair.

Girls are now eight and five. Girls will love, comfort and care for one another more and more as time goes on. Mother weeps now, not from guilt, but with joy.
