Surprise Me!

Aditi Khandelwal - Window

When they brought me in on a wheelchair
All I saw was a man looking outside the only window
Occupying the faraway bed seemed fair
As he was the one who described the meadows.

He looked out of the window and to me he described
The beautiful everlasting scene outside
One day he told me the sun is staying longer maybe it is bribed
Another day he said the leaves were falling all night.

Life is beautiful as he described
One day it will end, was his only fright
Beautiful flowers outside the window he will see no more
Really that bed without him will be sore.

Slowly one year passed by
Still I could make no movements
His fright came true, he did die
Left me and the window as the only tenants.

I asked the nurse to shift me by the window
No men I could see and not a car or a tree so tall
Where were the birds? Where were the meadows?
All I could see was a red brick wall.

Noticing the shock on my face, nurse said
‘The man was blind, but to make you smile
He made up things sitting up on his bed.’
Yes he did it, he did make me smile.
