The trend across the US to close down public schools will have a negative and disproportionate effect on minority communities. In New York City alone, 140 public schools have closed since 2002. The city government's plan was to close underperforming schools and replace them with stronger programs, and while this might have functioned well for some, it by no means worked for all, and the closings have now been halted.
