"Birdman" tops Spirit Award nominations

Diego Luna and Rosario Dawson were in Los Angeles on November 25 to announce the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards, celebrating the best in independent film.

These nods are seen as a good indicator of who will be nominated for next year's Academy Awards.

Leading the nominations was "Birdman" about a washed up Hollywood actor trying to reignite his career on Broadway.

It was nominated for Best Feature, Best Director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Best Cinematography, Best Actor for the lead Michael Keaton, Best Supporting Actor for Ed Norton and Best Supporting Actress for Emma Stone.

Hot on the footsteps of "Birdman" were three films: "Boyhood", a coming of age story of a young man which took director Richard Linklater 12 years to make; "Selma" about Martin Luther King's 1965 marches for equality; and "Nightcrawler" starring Jake Gyllenhaal which goes behind the scenes of a local TV network's crime scene videographer.
