This jam track is for advanced players. It uses a favorite scale of mine, which is variously referred to as "Lydian b3," "Lydian Minor" and "Lydian Diminished." Putting the jargon aside, it is a Lydian scale with a flatted third. In D, the notes are D, E, F, G#, A, B, C#.
The jam track is the second in my "Why-Be-Normal?" series -- also known as the "Mind-F**k" series. In the first video - Grunge Apocalypse - the challenge was to construct a solo over a track with a gradually disappearing tonal center. With this track, the challenge is to work with a scale that is strictly speaking not a mode of Major, Harmonic Minor or Melodic Minor but a hybrid, and consequently many of the intervals have a very alien feel. Lydian b3 is very dissonant but also very beautiful. Give it a try. It is well worth the effort.
If you know Lydian, then play D Lydian and just drop the F# to F and you will be in D Lydian b3.
If you aren't comfortable with modal talk, then play F# Minor scale shapes, but drop F# to F.
I'd definitely welcome a video response to this track!
