On Feb. 18, 2007, Chief Warrant Officer John Quinlan, 36, had been piloting a Chinook helicopter in southern Afghanistan when it crashed, killing him and seven others. Because Col. John Evans was the commander of Quinlan's battalion, he chose to notify his family. Evans had prepared himself to deliver the heartbreaking news to Quinlan's wife, Julie, but never expected a 10-year-old girl to answer the door.
