Since 1880, the average temperature of the Earth has been recorded. 2014 experienced the highest average temperature to date, beating out previous record holder 1998.

According to both NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2014 experienced the warmest temperatures on record since 1880.

1998 previously held the record, but 2014 was 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit higher.

The average surface temperature of the Earth has increased annually by approximately 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century.

In total, nine of the ten hottest years to date have all occurred during the 21st century.

This warming is attributed to an increase in the Earth's atmosphere of carbon dioxide and manmade emissions, which has predominately occurred in the last thirty years.
