Germany’s state-run job centres have come in for a tongue-lashing from their own boss Heinrich Alt.
Far from driving Germany’s economic miracle the Federal Labour Agency is too bureaucratic and ineffectual, and is bloated and inefficient with too many staff.
Alt challenges his agency to do more to reverse its failure to the more than one million long-term unemployed, and is cutting staff by 5000 by 2019.
While labour reforms have seen unemployment fall to record lows, the agency’s payroll has actually grown in size.
