Target’s ‘walk of shame’ lead to Graham Gentles suicide following false theft accusation

Retailer Target is being sued by the mother of a 22-year-old employee who killed himself in July 2013, after managers publicly humiliated him, as part of store policy. Graham A. Gentles had just enlisted in the Army shortly before being fired from his job as a cashier at a Target store in Pasadena, California. A coworker had accused Graham of stealing, and store policy dictated that Graham should be arrested on site and paraded through the store in handcuffs.

Virginia Gentles said her son had an argument with a coworker at a bar outside of work the night before, and that coworker raised the accusation of theft in retaliation against Graham.

When Graham arrived for work on July 15th, two managers were waiting for him outside, together with police officers. The confused and frightened Graham was handcuffed by police, who then searched his person for stolen items.

Graham was paraded around the store in handcuffs in a ritual known as the “walk of shame”. His mother says the “walk of shame” is policy at Target. Graham was then fired.

However, police found no stolen items and Target didn’t press any charges against Graham. He was later released from custody at the police station. At home, Graham told his mother he never stole anything. He was consumed with humiliation.

Three days later, on July 18th, Graham went to the roof of the Marriott Courtyard hotel and jumped off.

Graham A. Gentles had Aspergers Syndrome, which caused him to hyper-focus on the moment he was deliberately humiliated by Target in front of his friends and coworkers, without any evidence of wrongdoing.
