Ecuador's new revolutionary labor law just passed by the National Assembly will benefit the country's workers. The new legislation, first introduced by President Rafael Correa, extends social security and health-care benefits to all Ecuadorans who wish to sign up, particularly homemakers. It also eliminates workers' fixed-term contracts, making them permanent. The law contains provisions to protect women, Afro-Ecuadoran, and LGBT workers. Furthermore, the National Council for Work and Salaries was created to follow-up on the application of the legislation, which was prepared following consultations with 35 civil society organizations.
