Thus far this year, over 1,500 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea attempting to reach Europe. In the past ten days alone, 800 migrants died when their boats capsized and 10,000 were rescued. During 2014, about 170,000 migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Africa and the Middle East attempted the perilous journey, of whom 3,000 lost their lives. Observers note that foreign military intervention, which has fueled political violence and turmoil in many of the countries, has driven much of this migratory wave.
