The government of Peru has militarized the southern region of Arequipa, where protests against the Tia Maria copper mine continue. Three people have been killed in the protests, this time a policeman. Since March 23, hundreds of local farmers have been protesting against the mine, charging that copper and other chemicals will contaminate their water and destroy their crops.
