The Socceroos' Tim Cahill scored the best goal of the World Cup so far when he unleashed a rocket on Wednesday to level the scores against Holland.
But it was Van Persie and Arjen Robben who had the last laugh, their goals condemning Australia and Cahill to a 3-2 defeat and an early World Cup exit.
Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez and Chile continued their great form against Spain, beating the world champs 2-0 thanks to goals from Vargas and Aranguis.
Thursday's must win game between England and Uruguay turned out to be the Luis Suarez show with the talismanic striker giving Uruguay a first half lead.
While England's Wayne Rooney's 9 game, 8 year World Cup goal drought looked set to continue as he missed several good chances before netting a 75th minute equaliser, only for Suarez to all but end the Three Lion's World Cup dreams a few minutes later.
The results mean Spain, Australia and Cameroon are already on their way home, with England surely set to follow soon.
