Ecuador Advances in Protecting Rights of Afro-Descendants

Ecuador is home to more than one million Afro-descendants. Under President Rafael Correa's Citizens Revolution, the constitution was amended to define the country as multiethnic and multicultural, while presidential decree 60 recognizes the historical injustices and racism perpetrated against Afro-Ecuadorans and how it has affected their access to basic services. The Union of South American Nations, with headquarters in Quito, Ecuador, has set up a permanent working group to promote and protect the rights of Afro-descendants in the region.
