El Salvador’s President Salvador Sanchez Ceren is marking his first year in office. Sanchez had served as vice-president under former president Mauricio Funes, also of the left-wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). Funes' election put an end to 20 years of right-wing, neo-liberal governments. Since the former guerrilla commander has been in office, levels of illiteracy have dropped considerably in El Salvador. The current government has also invested in providing basic school supplies including shoes and uniforms to every student in the country. teleSUR
