Supporters of the Citizens’ Revolution in Ecuador staged a mass rally in Quito’s Plaza Grande on Monday to defend new taxes aimed at wealth redistribution. The inheritance bill introduced by President Rafael Correa will apply a small levy on the wealthiest members of society. The government is also introducing a capital gains tax, which officials say will put an end to land speculation. President Correa reminded the crowd the distribution of wealth in Latin America is the most unequal in the world, a fact that must be rectified.
